Kaamos retreat

A retreat in the polar night, when the sun stays below the horizon. A few hours of blue light a day, candles for the rest, and nothing to look at but each other's ideas.

How it runs

  1. Day 1, afternoonArrival in the last of the blue light. Cabins, warm drinks, a walk without torches.
  2. Day 1, eveningOpening session by candlelight. One question for the whole retreat.
  3. Day 2, middayThe light hours spent outside: snowshoes, a fire, lunch in a kota.
  4. Day 2, eveningStorytelling with a Sámi-owned host, then sauna.
  5. Day 3, morningClosing session. Everyone leaves with one decision written down.

What to know

  • Polar night lasts several weeks around midwinter in northern Lapland. The further north, the longer it lasts.
  • Cultural content comes only from Sámi-owned providers, on their terms and in their words.
  • It's dark, not dead: the snow reflects every bit of light, and aurora chances are good.

Good for

Leadership teams at a turning point. Small groups who want depth over activity.

Not for

Groups who need a packed activity programme, or anyone who really hates the dark.

Questions planners ask

What is kaamos?

Kaamos is the Finnish polar night: the weeks around midwinter when the sun stays below the horizon in northern Lapland. Days are a few hours of blue twilight, not total darkness.

Isn't a retreat in the dark depressing?

Most groups find the opposite. The short light makes the days feel deliberate, and the evenings by candle and fire are the part people remember.

How do you handle Sámi culture respectfully?

By working only with Sámi-owned providers, paying them properly, and letting them decide what is shared and how it is described. No costumes, no staged rituals.
